Dosage

When choosing the right dosage for your furry friend, it is good to know that certain concentrations of pure CBD in the product can treat different kinds of issues. It might be helpful to choose the right concentration of pure CBD depending on what kind of issues your cat may have.
Dosages play an important role in achieving the desired effects and positive improvements, thus finding out the right and appropriate amount of CBD for each individual cat is crucial. The right dosage for your cat depends on their weight and on the effects that are wanted to be achieved.

The right dosage for the right problem

Generally, a low (0.1 mg/kg) and a medium (0.2-0.5 mg/kg) dosage may target symptoms like anxiety, fear, stress, behavioural issues, mild pain, muscle tension and osteoarthritis, moderate pain, and muscle spasms respectively. Thus for some pets, those doses might be too little to see the results. A normal amount of CBD (0.5-1.0 mg/kg) may help with moderate to severe pain, neurogenic pain, degenerative myelopathy, tremors, idiopathic epilepsy, diabetes regulation, IBD. Lastly, a high dosage (1.0-5.0 mg/kg) may help treat refractory epilepsy, anti-neoplastic, refractory pain, and hospice care.

CatMed for example offers two types of products for cats with different concentrations: a 5% CBD concentration and a higher 10% CBD concentration.
Please note that one drop of the 5% CBD concentrated product includes around 2.5mg pure CBD while one drop of a 10% CBD concentrated product contains around 5mg of pure CBD.
In the following table, you can see the appropriate minimum amount of CBD (in mg) per intake which depends on the dosage of your choice and the weight of your cat’s. Our normal dosage recommendation for a medium-sized or larger-sized cat (4-8kg) is around 2-3 drops of CatMed 5% CBD oil per intake. For small-sized cats (2-4kg) 1-2 drops of CatMed 5% CBD oil should not be exceeded. We recommend not to exceed 3 intakes per day.

Since every cat is unique, we recommend finding your perfect dosage. To do so by using the statement: “Start low and go slow.” In addition, make sure to observe any results of the supportive treatment after one week of usage and increase or lower the dosage if necessary.

How to give CBD oil to cats

Before using the product, shake it well and put a few drops of the product into your cat’s mouth. Some cats might not like the earthy taste of pure CBD and might be unwilling to consume the product directly into their mouth, thus we can recommend a few tips: Try adding drops into their usual food or cat treats. We all know that cats like the taste and smell of fish and other meat, so the smellier the food the better and the more invisible the smell of the oil is. Another tip would be to dabble some CBD oil on the cat’s paw. The cat will proceed to clean its paws and thus consume the product unconsciously. Make sure your cat is calm and laying down for this trick, otherwise you will find little oily paw steps all over your floor. We also suggest keeping a journal or a log of the cat’s CBD dosing, reactions, and behaviour to keep track of changes and effects.

What is the difference between pet and human CBD?

It is generally not impossible to give your cat human CBD but there are quite a lot of things to be careful about. If the CBD oil has a very low dose, i.e. 2-3%, and comes from a trusted source, you can also rely on the THC content below 0.2%, then it may be possible to give it to your cat. Though we suggest using CBD that is particularly designed for cats to be on the safe side. Keep in mind that CBD oils for humans usually have added flavour components or other additional ingredients that are not suitable for your cat’s stomach or appealing for their taste buds. So make sure that there are only two ingredients in the product: CBD extract and a carrier oil (hemp seed oil, coconut oil, olive oil). In addition, CBD oils designed for humans tend to have a much higher concentration, which makes it harder to administer the right dose and might be too big for your pet to handle. Do not worry, your pet cannot get a CBD overdose since it does not have any psychoactive effects, thus noticeable side effects might appear to indicate that the dosage needs to be lowered.

Could CBD oils be combined or taken with other meds?

It is important to note that even though CBD can react with specific medications. Furthermore, each cat may react differently to CBD or its combination with medications. This is why we strongly recommend consulting with your veterinarian first before starting or discontinuing any medications or supplements that your cat’s therapy includes.

Since CBD inhibits Cytochrome P45 (known as heme proteins with enzymatic activity that are responsible for breaking down a certain percentage of clinically prescribed medications) it can interact with and affect the metabolism of certain prescription drugs (Jiang et al., 2011). To be specific, it can allow for too much medication to be in the cat’s system at once by delaying a drug’s metabolism rate which can raise the risk of side effects. Although this appears to be mostly of minimal clinical significance, it can affect cats that are using medications like anticonvulsants to control seizures (Deabold et al., 2019). This means that the dosages of other anticonvulsants need to be adjusted or fully excluded from your cat’s diet to take in CBD safely and fully feel its benefits.
To be on the safe side, discussing and consulting with your veterinarian first before combining CBD with other medications, can help prevent any unwanted side effects or other negative symptoms.
